WhatsUp Gold sends device state notifications through the E-mail action in an action policy, and you write the email subject and body yourself with percent variables. The Flashduty email integration receives these emails and uses rules on the email title to decide whether each one triggers or resolves an alert, so no separate WhatsUp Gold integration is needed: create an email integration in Flashduty, put its email address in the receiver of the WhatsUp Gold E-mail action, then set the subject format and push rules below.

In Flashduty On-call

Get the integration email address in either of the two ways below. In both cases choose the Email integration type, not WhatsUp Gold.

Use a dedicated integration

  1. In the Flashduty console, select Channels and open a channel
  2. Select Settings → Integrations → Dedicated integrations and click Add an integration
  3. Select Email and click Save
  4. Open the new integration card, copy the email address, then configure the push rules below

Use a shared integration

  1. In the Flashduty console, select Integration Center → Alert events
  2. Select Email, enter an integration name and copy the email address
  3. Configure the push rules below
  4. Set a default route, select a channel and click Save

Configure WhatsUp Gold

WhatsUp Gold emails carry no alert ID, so the subject below includes the device display name and Flashduty extracts it as the Alert Key. The down and up emails differ only in the prefix, so both yield the same key and the up email closes the matching alert. The paths below are for WhatsUp Gold 2023.0.
  1. Go to SETTINGS → Action & Alerts → Actions and Policies, click Add on the Actions tab, select E-mail, and create the down action:
    • Receiver: the address of the Flashduty email integration
    • Sender, SMTP Server, Port, encryption and authentication: fill in for your mail server
    • Under Active and Passive Monitors, set Subject to [WhatsUp Gold] DOWN %Device.DisplayName
    • Set Message body to Plain Text with %Device.DisplayName (%Device.Address) %Device.State
  2. Create a second E-mail action for recovery with the same receiver and mail server settings, Subject [WhatsUp Gold] UP %Device.DisplayName, and the same Message body
  3. On the Action Policies tab click Add to open the Action Policy Builder and add two rules (Edit Policy Rule):
    • Rule 1: Select an action from the Action Library = the down action, Execute the action on the following state change = Down
    • Rule 2: the up action, Execute the action on the following state change = Up
  4. Save the action policy and apply it to the devices you want notifications for
Percent variables are case sensitive and must not contain spaces. %Device.DisplayName is the display name from the device’s General properties, %Device.Address is the device IP address, and %Device.State is the current state description, for example Down at least 2 min. To get one alert per monitor instead of per device, bind the action policy to a specific active monitor and append - %ActiveMonitor.Name to the subject of both actions. %ActiveMonitor.Name only has a value when the action is associated directly with an active monitor; it cannot be used in a device-level action policy.

Configure push rules in Flashduty

  1. Set Push mode to Trigger or close alert based on rules
  2. Add the two rules below in this order. Each rule’s condition is Email title Match the given regex, and the Alert Key is extracted from the Email title
  3. Under Default rules, choose: if none of the above rules match, discard email
Rule 1: close the alert
Rule 2: trigger an alert
The close rule comes before the trigger rule. Both regexes extract what follows the subject prefix, which is the device display name (plus the monitor name when you alert per monitor), so the down email, repeated notifications and the up email of one device land on the same alert. The default rule discards unmatched mail so that other WhatsUp Gold emails, such as ones from other E-mail actions you created, don’t create alerts that can never close on their own.

Limitations

  • Recovery needs an up action: Flashduty receives recovery emails only if the action policy has an action on the Up state change. Without one, turn on the auto-resolve timeout in the channel that receives this integration; 24 hours is a reasonable start.
  • Repeated notifications: with Repeat action checked in the policy, the down email is resent at the interval. The titles are identical, so they merge into one alert.
  • Severity: in Flashduty these alerts show the Email integration type, and their severity is always Warning. You can adjust it with alert pipelines.
  • Rules depend on the subject: if you change the subject templates, update the regexes in the rules to match.
